How many people bike, walk, and skateboard on Gresham streets & trails?
Help conduct counts or surveys on trail & sidewalk use in Gresham as part of a nationwide effort |
Be counted!
Even if you don't volunteer, please show-up and be counted at one of the locations below if you bike, walk, skateboard, or rollerblade on the trails or streets in the Gresham area. Ed.
Volunteers needed
Gresham is participating in a nationwide effort to document the number of people biking, walking, skateboarding, and rollerblading on trails and local streets. As part of that effort, City staff is asking for volunteers to help conduct counts and surveys.
The counts will be conducted September 14th, 15th, and 16th from 7 to 9 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m., and September 18th and 19th from 9 to 11 a.m. The City has identified 18 locations where counts will be taken:

Count or Survey?
Volunteers can choose to conduct counts or conduct a short survey. The surveys well help provide information on trip distance, why people use trails, and what types of trials they prefer.
Your participation in this effort will help the City gain valuable information on walking and bicycling:
- Baseline data: How many people are biking? Walking? Where? What are the volume trends from year to year?
- What is the return on investment in bike lanes, trails and sidewalks: How many people use bike/pedestrian facilities after they are built?
- How can safety be improved: Certain locations have high numbers of bike/pedestrian crashes, but what is the risk exposure rate? Is it high or low relative to bike/pedestrian volumes? How should safety improvements be prioritized?

Growing Hope: Advocating for Maternal Health
By Alma Landon, Wilkes East Resident
![]() |
As a dedicated doula, my work is never done. I am passionate about supporting mothers and families during one of the most transformative times in their lives. I'm taking my advocacy to the state capital to present my testimony for Senate Bill 692 and Bill 693 before the Early Childhood Committee. |
This bill aims to enhance early childhood and behavioral health services, a crucial step in nurturing the next generation.
Having witnessed the profound impact that maternal mental health can have on families, I firmly believe that providing comprehensive support is essential for fostering healthy connections. Our community’s well-being starts with ensuring that mothers feel heard, supported, and equipped to thrive.
I envision a world where every mother has access to the resources and care they need, allowing them to embrace their role with confidence and joy. Together, we can create a nurturing environment for our children and help build a resilient future.
Through advocacy, education, and community engagement, we can continue to grow hope for maternal health and well-being.
Meet Ed Spradlin, 'Tooth Taxi' volunteer extraordinaire
Hi! My name is Ed Spradlin, I am 77yrs young, and I have lived in Portland/Gresham all my life. I grew up in North Portland across from Columbia Park. I attended grade school in Portsmouth and Highland. I then attended Jefferson Hight School, followed by Oregon State University. I was drafted to Vietnam, and after my return continued my education to graduate from Portland State University. |
![]() Ed Spradlin |
My family ultimately moved out to Gresham 45 years ago, and I have lived there ever since. I am now involved in volunteering for a non-profit that helps under privileged children get access to dental care. The Dental Foundation of Oregon is the non-profit organization that supports and funds the "Tooth Taxi". This is basically a large rolling dental clinic on wheels that travels across Oregon to schools and communities not only educating families but giving actual dental care to children in need.
My family and friends have also joined me in my efforts to help raise money for this cause. What started as me walking the streets in search of cans and bottles to raise money, has now blossomed into an ever growing team of individuals sharing in this effort. Team "Can Do". |
![]() Some of the many bottles & cans Ed has collected for the the 'Tooth Taxi' |
Every day I am overwhelmed by the beauty of all these individuals who have eagerly stepped up to be a part of something that is growing in support. People want to help. They just, often, don't know how. I have realized something in this process, and it is validated everyday by all the people who have joined this cause. We can do amazing things alone, but even more amazing things together. Together we are team "Can Do".
Outstanding job Ed!
