Keep Drugs Out of the Water Supply
Sometimes we forget the toilet is not a trash can. The City's Wastewater Services asks residents to help keep water sources clean by not flushing unused medications and personal care products down the toilet or sink. In one national study of 139 streams in 30 states, drugs were found in 80% of the samples. In the Potomac River, male fish were discovered producing eggs. While there is no evidence of risk to human health, these products contain compounds detected in trace amounts in aquatic systems even past the wastewater treatment plant. Read more...

Send criminals a message!
America's Night Out
|
When: Tuesday, Aug 3th, 2010 7-10PM
Where: Your Neighborhood!
Celebrate the 27th anniversary of National Night Out by hosting an event in your neighborhood on August 3rd.
Last year over 36 million people, from every state, across 15,000 communities participated in events to help make communities safe and raise awareness about anticrime programs.
National Night Out is a time when individuals and groups are encourgaged to gather together after dark in parks and other public places for wholesome activities. The idea is to symbolically reclaim our public spaces by using them, encouraging other people to use them and making the space feel safe, and discouraging illegal and anti-social activity.
So, go ahead -- invite your neighbors -- gather on someone's lawn or porch and turn-on the lights! Celebrate National Night Out 2010. Take a stand. Dont't let crime control your neighborhood.
- National Night Out is designed to:
- Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness,
- Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs,
- Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and
- Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
- Along with the traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils National Night Out is also celebrated with:
- block, lawn and porch parties,
- cookouts,
- visits from local police and sheriff departments
- parades, exhibits,
- flashlight walks,
- contests, and
- youth programs.
Organize a National Night Out Event in Your Neighborhood!
